About

Marina Renée-Cemmick’s paintings and drawings look at our relationship with both inner and outer spaces, those that are private and public. Through a process of fragmentation and re-assemblage, she uses figures and landscapes in a collaged layering of imagery that often alludes to a narrative of personal or collective healing, in a multitude of forms. The human body is a central focus, and is often exposed to reveal tension between dualities; vulnerability and strength, beauty and the grotesque, sorrow and joy. Marina is interested in paint and uses multiple techniques to produce visceral and organic textures. Underpinning all her work is a drawing practice which remains at the core of investigating and representing the spaces she inhabits and draws inspiration from.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

These portraits are loosely inspired by a National Geographic documentary 'This Clown Philosopher in a Wonderful, Whimsical World. It speaks about the fool and the role of the clown. Joel Jeske says that "the clown falls down so we don't have to". David Shiner adds "The primal foundation of clowning, is human suffering. Clowning is about being able to laugh about the things that hurt... the embarrassing moment, the despair. Clowning is powerful because it deals with the human condition. It's transforming pain into laughter." In the portraits I wanted to give the essence of this duality. I chose coloured pencil so I could build up layers of colour and find the form within that.
