About

Harriet Gillett’s work playfully circulates around themes of memory, identity and our relationship with myths and nature. With influences ranging from the literary to the art historical, she works from a mixture of observational drawing and memory, blending past, present and the imagined to create dream-like narratives that visually blur the boundaries between what is ‘real’ and what is remembered, and poke at the fluid nature of language and supposed 'truths'. She employs a variety of mediums and processes, often bringing together seemingly juxtaposing materials or subject matters to show unexpected links through their harmony, such as layering organic oil over acidic spray paint, or melded watercolour pigment to suggest fluidity.

Harriet holds a BA in English Literature from Edinburgh University. She studied a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from City and Guilds of London Arts School in 2020 and has just started her MA there.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

These works are part of a series based on the myth of Diana hunting Acteon. It draws on various historical depictions of the myth, which often portray Diana surrounded with leopards and female 'nymphs', whose bodies have often been misrepresented and come to symbolise objects of status or power rather than be subjects in their own right. My paintings seek to draw out alternative themes within the myth, including sisterhood, female empowerment, emotional agency and an interconnectedness with nature.
