About
Hannah Thomas is a British artist, currently based in Wiltshire, creating large abstract works on existential themes. She has a BA hons in Art and Visual Culture from University of West of England. Formally a professional photographer based in London, she changed to painting in 2017 in pursuit of greater artistic autonomy, to revitalise her creative appetite and energy and to make visible her interior world.
Brief Statement:
To me painting is all about a raw, instinctive response to an emotional condition, putting it on a canvas as truthfully as possible and in my own language. It is a chance to convey an interior world and to give form to a powerful existential desire for both freedom and connection. Lately, my ongoing themes of the absurd, romantic and chaotic have developed into more personal issues of conflicting desires, pressures of time and ageing and the constraints put on the individual by society: a plea for the release of one’s potency in a world that increasingly restricts and confines.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
My works are consistently fairly large, and it is quite alien for me to work on a smaller scale, let alone postcard size. It took a lot of thought to decide how to approach this project and I realised that my work could not be scaled down to fit. Instead I would simply use some of the detail and background preparation that I use on my large paintings. In and of themselves, they can be quite beautiful, textural and multi layered. They are acrylic paint and ink, often rubbed back for transparency, combined with signature mark making.
