Ellen Gronemeyer (b. 1979, Fulda, Germany) paints grotesque yet whimsical portraits of somber architectural spaces, reminiscent of the sparse work of the Art Brut. Her cartoony figures have generic facial features, but beam with toothy grins through thickly applied impasto. However, her interior scenes are more somber. Utilizing a unique point of view, they are paintings about paintings and are layered with the same thick application of pigment. She currently lives and works in Berlin.
Artist Statement: Paint and brushstroke merge into the figures, and vice versa, figures dissolve into flickering surface patterns. The illusion of a horse or a cat transforms into a surface of brush marks and grey celebratory paint surface.I love that Quotation of David Foster Wallace: „ ... artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the “Oh how banal”. To risk accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness“.
