ARTIST INFO
About
Charlie Chesterman (b.1996, UK) lives and works in South London. He explores through
his works aspects of popular culture and everyday life to satirise contemporary rituals
or occurrences. The narrative of the work tends to celebrate a subject while simultaneously
condemning it. Chesterman has increasingly approached paintings as reliefs, collage can be used not only as an addition to a piece, but simultaneously as a withdrawal of what was
previously underneath, a hierarchy of layering. The use of rich and generous oil paint
in areas often represents the greed of the subjects. Chesterman is captivated by
dramatic visual art, works that employ immediate impact.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
I see my paintings as inquests into extravagance, for these postcards I wanted to return to the subject of fireworks. Fireworks are consistently replacing and covering each other in the exact same place. The process of my work is quite similar in which there is a consistent layering of paint and collage until the display is finished.
Most importantly fireworks are a celebration and I wanted to celebrate a great initiative.
