Gouache and Ink on Paper

Simon Keenleyside graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2002 with an MA in Painting having achieved a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting at Brighton University in 2000. He won The BOC Emerging Artist Award in 2002 and was the UK winner of the Lexmark European Art Prize in 2004. Keenleyside has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and internationally in Italy, Tokyo, America and Denmark. His work is in prominent private and corporate collections globally.
Working within the tradition of British landscape painting Keenleyside explores the familiar surroundings of Essex, where he grew up and where he continues to live to this day.
Depicting these spaces with an ability that discloses the mystery and ambiguity surrounding them, he not only evokes physical places, but also mental states and the desires and anxieties that accompany him during repeated trips.
Nature is often depicted as otherworldly, suffused in ultraviolet hues and presented without perspectival recession or with an exaggerated frame of reference that imply an overwhelming experience for both Keenleyside and viewer. They inevitably produce a sense of unease and tension but are at the same time mystical and bewildering landscapes
