About
Lucy Hutchings is a British painter whose work highlights the absurdity of human tendencies, focusing on shameful behaviours and ones that reject our social conditionings. Inspired by personal and shared experiences of debauchery, Lucy reimagines the familiar world as unsettling and carnivalesque. Orifices, bodily fluids, laughter and pain are subjects to push and pull imagery which are both pleasurable and grotesque, seductive and repulsive.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
Blue Crowd is a monochromatic painting capturing a fleeting moment in an ambiguous crowd. I was thinking about the shifting movement of disco spotlights in a nightclub and how they illuminate bodies. Oil paint is used to push and pull the individuals, mimicking the passing light, and thus exposing laughter, singing or screaming.
