About

I work from photographic references most often changing and montaging elements so a ‘place’ doesn’t exist but is created. Tones can be radically manipulated, it is not my intention to then simply translate this source in the process of painting, I wish to achieve a further shift, something present which is unknown, a finished painting I don’t fully understand.

Grids are often present in my work, while useful in constructing a painting I also rework, redraw and edit them so traces remain. A continually evolving series ‘These Dark Woods’ which allows nature to speak of the human condition and more includes these marks which can allude to maps, scales, cross-hairs, crosses and more. @allanmartinartist

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

As unusually small works, I decided to explore within the series ‘These Dark Woods’ – the works are of locations where something unknown has or is about to happen.
