About

I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but South London has been my home for many years now. Originally trained in in ceramics at Camberwell College of Art in the early 90s, after graduation I ran a ceramics studio for twelve years, supplying a number of galleries across the UK and also selling internationally. Later on I moved away from clay to explore working on paper and canvas, which led to an MA in studio printmaking from The University of Brighton in 2007. Since then I have been working as mixed-media artist, mostly in collage. My work features layered images coupled with a fair amount of bright colour and surface decoration and emerges from a fusion of painting, printmaking and found imagery. The resulting creations are often humorous and whimsical, with random connections between images. Creative inspiration comes from my growing archive of ephemera, which includes photograph albums, technical manuals, illustrated dictionaries, vintage documents, my grandmother’s fashion magazines, knitting pattern books and scraps of writing among other things. The layering of found imagery and memorabilia runs across all my creations, whether they be mixed media works on canvas, collages, greeting card designs, or decorative objects.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

I've submitted four portraits of women, three imaginary and one of a real person (me!). I took the opportunity to experiment whith the self-portrait, which was created by weaving together two prints of the same photo with a tonal variation. This is a technique that I teach in my collage classes but don't normally use in my own work, and the postcard size gave me the chance to try it out without running out of patience! The other three pieces are mixed media collages inspired by faces of women from historical paintings, either used as collage elements or, in 'Mariana', painted in gouache.
