Using the historical traditions and genres of renaissance and classical portraiture as a starting point Natasha Michaels recasts and redirects her characters using her own expressive language. Challenging and reinterpreting traditional images of portraiture she simultaneously investigates her own ambivalence towards the material she is drawing from whilst also revelling in and paying homage to them. She re-directs the original sitters reimagining them as fictional characters. depicting them as if they have been accidentally caught off guard in a moment of uncomfortable emotion.
She playfully engages with ideas of power, authority, artifice and gender, inviting the viewer to consider the status of the people that populate her pictures, .Painterly melding of cartoons, social media filters, make up contouring, and old masters – encourage us to tease out new interpretations from these composites, asking the viewer to reconsider the original artworks and to take pleasure in both the sameness and the differences.
