About

I was born in St. Ives, Cornwall. I live in Santa Cruz, California. Both places are occasional subjects in my work. I paint things I have found or inherited, such as books, pamphlets or post cards. These things are often mass-market, sexy, romantic, sensational or mysterious. They have been around for a while. They show signs of wear and tear. There is more to them than meets the eye. They are products of mass production, manufactured swiftly, and the image captures a moment in time, but I work many hours to faithfully copy them, right down to each accident, crease, tear or smudge. The paintings are not always finished but I consider them complete. When complete, I often juxtapose the thing and the painting of the thing, within the frame - but not always. If not, it can be assumed that I took a long time, entering the frame, making a good copy.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

I have submitted two pieces for the auction - “Correct Perspective” and “Vanishing Point 2”. Both are watercolour paintings of postcards. “Vanishing Point 2” is from a post card written by my grandmother, in 1948. It shows the house I was born in, in the Warren of St. Ives, before I was born. “Correct Perspective” is from a post card of the Mystery Spot, in Santa Cruz, California, where I live, before I was born.
