Meet the Artist: Maayan Sophia Weisstubb
Maayan Sophia Weisstubb is a multidisciplinary artist, living and working in the United Kingdom.
What were your frames of reference for your postcard Glass of Milk?
There were several references for my work "Glass of Milk." The first and primary one was the Mastos, an ancient Greek drinking vessel shaped like a woman's breast. The second reference was the myth about the coupe glass molded from Marie Antoinette's left breast—these were my two conceptual references. Aesthetically, I drew inspiration from René Magritte's paintings.
Collage is an amalgamation of multiple sources, do you find that the process of this medium changes the nature of your work?
I often incorporate collage into my works. I don't see it as changing the nature of my artworks but rather as a method that serves an idea I have. Typically, a new work begins with an idea for me—a thought or feeling I want to share. Then, I choose a medium to help communicate that idea, whether it's drawing, collage, sculpture, video, etc. Sometimes, a collage serves as a starting point and can later evolve into video art or even sculpture!
If you could describe your practice in five words, what would you say?
Difficult, but I'll try: Eclectic, organic, Wabi-Sabi, bursting, authentic.
What projects do you have on the horizon that you’re excited about?
I've been shortlisted for the John Ruskin Art Prize, so I'll be participating in a group exhibition opening in London on February 1st (running until February 17th). There are more exciting projects planned for later this year, but I can’t share them just yet!
