Ramiro Fernandez Saus
Ramiro Fernandez Saus’s paintings transport viewers to nonspecific distant places. He imbues everyday scenes with hints of fantasy, populating domestic spaces and landscapes with a menagerie of sailors, monkeys, parrots, tigers, and house cats. These mysterious tableaux have been widely exhibited in Spain; the Museu d’Art de Sabadell mounted a major retrospective of Saus’s works in 2005. Saus is a master of the implied narrative, inserting evocative visual cues and symbols that trigger the imagination and offer escapist fictions. In addition to paintings, which he renders with soft brushstrokes, Saus creates small-scale sculptures that similarly touch on the exotic. His works can be found in museum collections including the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid, and the Albertina Museum, Vienna.
