Secret Auction: Sage Vaughn

Here at Art on a Postcard, we couldn't be more thrilled to have Sage Vaughn on board as one of our contributing artists.

Sage Vaughn is a world renowned contemporary painter and illustrator based in LA. He is best known for his wildlife series of works, depicting colourful woodland creatures against the backdrop of urban cityscapes. Born in 1976 in Jackson, Oregon, Vaughn was raised by 'off the grid hippy' parents, whose influence greatly affected the playful and humorous elements of his art. He freely discusses their open-minded and liberal lifestyles as having a huge impact on his perceptions of love in human relationships. 'When you see a 70 pound crazy crackhead pushing another 70 pound crackhead in a wheelchair on “the Nickel” in downtown, and you think, “Dude, they are in love, and that is so rad.”  Those are the things I think are really great, and my parents showed me that.'

Sage's father was also a painter, and throughout his childhood he recalls the pair visiting the local zoo to sit together all afternoon drawing the animals. It was this introduction to art which greatly impacted upon the future subject matter of his paintings and illustrations, with Vaughn's work mainly concentrating on the differences between humans and animals; the 'wild side' in humans making a fascinating contrast to the 'civilised aspects' of animal behaviour.

Starting out as a graffiti artist in downtown LA, Sage has watched the evolution of street art turn from vandalism to highly lucrative works within the contemporary art market. He highlights the 'weird taming' of graffiti within respected art world settings, stating; 'the only thing I like about graffiti is that it is wild, so to see it get tamed is like seeing a tiger in the jungle; it’s a once in a lifetime experience, but seeing a tiger in the zoo just feels so different.''

Take a look through the Secret Auction works and see if you can guess which one is Sage's.
