Benjamin Murphy caught up with David earlier this week

BM - For those that might not know, please explain who you are and what you do.

DB – I am David Bray. I draw pictures for other people and myself. I work as a commercial illustrator and play at being an artist.

BM - Have you always been so creative?

DB– Since I can remember. Always had a pencil in my hand. I looked up to my elder brother who was an amazing draughtsman – spent my childhood trying to be him.

My Dad worked in the arts, so was always surrounded by art and artists. Don’t know any different I suppose!

BM – You combine very technically precise portraits with childlike drawings and cartoons, what is it that attracts you to these diverse styles of drawing.

DB -  Split personality. We both agree.

BM – You seem to draw more than the average artist, would you say you are an obsessiver drawer.

DB-  Yes indeed. Its an addiction. Its a fear of eventually having to get a regular job again, maybe I’m just trying to look busy.

BM - What made you want to get involved with Art On A Postcard?

DB -  Hepatitis C affected the lives of some very close friends, and being invited to be involved happened soon after. It is the least I could do to help out.

BM - What other exciting things are you working on at the moment?

DB –  I have some works heading to Parlor Gallery in New Jersey for a show next

Month. Planning for a residency in Montreux at the start of next year. And have a

Collaborative show with John McCarthy at the Ben Oakley gallery in October.

More immediately I’m off to the apple store to get terrified and confused. Need to replace my ancient mac which sadly expired yesterday

BM – Where can we find out more about your work?

DB -  I got a lovely newish website davidbray.eu

Instagram is a favourite at the moment.

Davidbray_art. Had to be that to differentiate from David Bray golf.
