ARTIST INFO
"Having learnt a traditional portrait technique known as “sightsize” in a painting school in Italy, I am keen to experiment with Old Master portraits, placing them in a different contexts. This project started as a series of public murals to encourage engagement with graffiti writers. To my delight, a direct dialogue emerged between classical art and street art in spite of their historic, cultural and social distance. There is something thrilling about seeing a Rembrandt portrait covered in modern day graffiti tags and street art drawings.
Over time, I started defacing my own portraits in the studio.
As the distinction between graffiti and street art remains blurry, the figure drawing over my work represents the tension between “street artists” and “graffiti writers”, and the struggle that can also be found defining the line between art and vandalism. It is also a symbol of the frustration of copying Old Master paintings and the satisfaction of destroying them, since I will never be as good a painter as Rembrandt or Da Vinci."
