Wolfgang Tillmans for Photography on a Postcard

We are delighted to present Wolfgang Tillman's photo postcard released exclusively to Photography on a Postcard and a one of a kind piece. Wolfgang Tillmans was the first photographer – and also the first non-British person – to be awarded the Tate annual Turner Prize. His portraits, still lifes, sky photographs (e.g. the Concorde series), astrophotography, aerial shots and landscapes are motivated equally by aesthetic and political interests, especially related to homosexuality and gender identity.

Tillmans is concerned with the limitations of the world, such as limitations of freedom. Perspectives are so important, often what limits us is our own perspective of the world that has been conditioned and constructed by various power structures. Tillmans's work gets close enough, often literally as with his Lobster photographs, to invite the viewer to view the work through his lens, or arguably his eyes- he says of his own work “I take pictures, in order to see the world”. This concept has the potential for serious social change, proving that it is possible to take a step out of our own shoes and view the world as another. In the words of Nono Ayuso his work is 'about wanting to do things together, wanting to see things together and not just seeing things for yourself.'

Wolfgang had an extroadinary exhibition this May-June at the Tate Modern to huge crowds. He also took over the south Tank for ten days with an immersive  installation featuring his work in music and video, interspersed with live events in which Tillmans and his collaborators explored the capabilities of the sound system and the acoustic qualities of the space. It was an installation that aimed 'to present an insight into his admiration of music and acknowledgement of its importance in his life'. Again it was about his sharing an experience and a joy with each viewer immersing them in something that has impacted him greatly, we slip into his perspective during the installation.

We are extremely excited that  Wolfgang's photo postcard is what the artist took from inside the South Tank installation. We feel very lucky to have such a beautiful piece, a reflection of the artists perspectives on his own work. We are given an insight into his own response to his work, we are invited to view his installation through his eyes, and we find wonderful colour, magnificent shapes that create a sense of excitement and introspection. This piece is exclusive to Photography on a Postcard and a one of a kind piece.
