Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

In this gouache study, 'Pumpkin Spider,' a woman stares at a vibrant orange spider through the branches of a cherry tree. Both subjects have a slightly uncanny, alien look and they're connected by the orange hue, which also appears on the bow that draws together the woman's shirt. The brightly-colored surface is built up of small, opaque hatch-marks that evoke the techniques used in early Renaissance tempera paintings.
