About

Daniel Sparkes, known as Mudwig, is a British artist working across painting, illustration and sculpture. His recent paintings fuse surrealism with comic abstraction, drawing from 16th-century Dutch still life and early Disney animation cels. This results in “Spoof Monuments”—dilapidated totems that blur the line between object and character. Modern trademarks emerge as primitive hieroglyphs, intertwining symbols of the natural and technological worlds. Sparkes’ work explores the subconscious and alternate realities, constructing a visual language where the familiar is warped into something uncanny and dreamlike. His art has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize and ING Discerning Eye award and continues to exhibit internationally, with solo shows in Tokyo, New Zealand, Paris and London.
