The Artist

Mandy Payne

Mandy Payne is a contemporary artist whose work explores themes of urban change, gentrification, social inequality, and the evolving cityscape. Drawing inspiration from Brutalist architecture and the tension between utopia and dystopia, she finds beauty in overlooked and transitional spaces.

Since 2012, Payne has been widely recognised for her long-term focus on Park Hill in Sheffield—one of Britain’s most iconic Brutalist housing estates—capturing its transformation through regeneration and the resulting displacement of communities. Her practice is deeply rooted in materiality, using concrete, spray paint, and, more recently, marble and lightweight reinforced panels to reflect the architectural environments she depicts.

A long-standing supporter of Art on a Postcard, Mandy has contributed to the initiative for many years, helping to raise vital funds through her work. Her latest print release continues this exploration, offering a powerful visual narrative of the urban condition.

'My paintings start, usually, with an urban walk or exploration of a location which might be familiar or might be completely new to me. I find locations that I think might inspire me from various sources, from books, online, or Instagram. I have thousands of photos on my phone which might make possible paintings and once home I usually edit them, honing in or cropping them severely to get the composition that I am looking for. I will then make a detailed drawing from the photo which I then transfer onto a concrete tile that I have hand-cast. I then build up the image in layers using spray paint, masking out different areas with thin masking tape and newspaper to zone different areas of colour.'
