About

With a vocation as an artist-engineer and a certain ease in the movement of the body through marginal spaces, Grip Face builds bridges between contexts, elements, techniques, extensions, measures, and people. Liquid like a cat, his proposal adapts to the container that holds it; with a language as personal as it is collective, seeking to be part of and reflect the zeitgeist, Oliver’s work offers us a playful space filled with layers where we can dissect the concerns of an impatient generation, hungry for information—whether or not its truth is decisive—and for which the landscape of the Internet seems to be the best setting for the proper learning of savoir-faire.

Whether due to the perpetual feeling of dislocation that has accompanied him since childhood, or the anxiety inevitably triggered by the prospect of a society inexorably heading towards technological massification, communication through devices, and virtual relationships, Grip Face is hindered by boundaries. He first erased the line between public and private—moving from painting on the streets to exhibiting his pieces in white cubes—and later, he redefines it simply by changing the order: from the workshop-refuge, with its corresponding drawings, plans, and material studies, to the Gran Vía.

Duality saturates the materialization of his consciousness; he oscillates between abstraction and figuration, the digital and the analog, the fear that paralyzes and the fear that makes you run with an impossible agility and strength. This drive has led him to move his work around the globe (from a residency at the Museums Quartier in Vienna to fairs in Madrid and Mexico or exhibitions in Seoul and Paris), expanding the boundaries of an evolutionary and infinite exploration that is part of the same learning process of the artist who creates them. Whether as an artist or a curator—another of his facets—for David Oliver, meaning lies in continuity and expansion, in not being able to see the end, in living the artistic expression as we live in the world, transitorily and in an uncertain present.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

Here’s the refined, intellectual version of the text translated into English:

The works form a series that explores the concept of the deconstructed avatar, offering a generational reflection on the threshold that both separates and connects the analog and digital realms. It is a generation in constant transition, one that has grown up immersed in a context shaped by recurrent economic crises and a profound disillusionment with the prospect of an uncertain future.
