About

Joseph Black lives and works in Kent. He trained at Camberwell College of Art, graduating with a BFA in painting in 2015, followed by a Master’s Degree in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute in 2016. He currently exhibits with Jonathan Cooper Gallery in London and as a designer for Hermès in Paris.

Black’s work conveys a quiet and eternal presence, making real the beauty and temporality of nature. Of particular interest to him are the spatial and temporal ambiguities produced through the play of form and light, the pairing of objects and background, and the uncertain state of material presence and absence. Through subtle pairings in color, tone, scale, and composition, Black is able to convey the ever-changing perceptual understanding and memory of the objects and beings one encounters. Black’s paintings offer a truly remarkable experience rooted in a timeless and beautifully honest sensitivity.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

“For this piece I’ve chosen to paint a small and delicate oil study of a foal. Horses are a subject I’ve returned to repeatedly for their quality of movement and expression. For this small painting I decided to paint an equally small horse. I wanted to capture a feeling of fragility yet optimism and uncertainty. The young horse stepping out into an uncertain new world.”

Insulate Ukraine

Overview

We bring warmth, light and safety to war-impacted homes with an innovative window developed with the help of engineers from the University of Cambridge. We've installed more than 20,000 windows in cities across Ukraine. Our projects provide work to financially destitute areas empowering local communities.

Problem

During winter many Ukrainians will face freezing conditions due to their windows being shattered. Current solutions such as OSB fall short on several counts. They don't insulate well, they don't let light through, they can be difficult to install, and they shatter.

Solution

Our triple-glazed polyethylene windows provide an affordable, effective remedy, that increases resilience in communities worst affected by the invasion.

Benefits

Our windows present multifaceted benefits. For recipients, they ensure warmth, safety, and improved living conditions. Local civilians gain work which fuels regional business. Donors contribute to a solution that enhances energy efficiency, supports economic growth, and aids the most vulnerable, creating profound environmental, economic, and social impacts in Ukraine.
