About

Minyoung Kim was born in Seoul in 1989, and lives and works in London. Graduating from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2021, Kim also holds an MFA in printmaking and a BA in Western Painting from Sungshin Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea.

Kim’s work mirrors her inner-most feelings, ones that language fails to express. By using different materials such as oil or acrylic on canvas, dry mediums on paper, ceramics, animations and so on, she portrays, in a soft manner, ironic scenes that combine what she refers to as strange but cute elements. It’s in this ambivalence, both light and serious, that she explores and reveals her inner self.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

"I explore ideas around the surreal and uncanny. Mischievous feline protagonists are used to subvert or accelerate/exaggerate dangerous and precarious situations, imbuing everyday domestic settings and scenarios with dark humour and animated surrealism. Snakes, flowers fish and anthropomorphic food items also play recurring characters alongside the black cats, in more expansive spaces such as moonlit landscapes and oceans. Though seemingly safe and idyllic, mystery, threat and danger are implicit, as depicted in shadows cast by hand-held knives, sibilant snakes and eclectic mythological creatures and rituals.

Inspiration takes the form of dreamlike images, ideals and tendencies portrayed in social media, films and animation, particularly via the oral and written traditions of folklore, myth, fairytale and poetry. I take such visuality and overlay it with storytelling and nuance sprung from the dualities of my own memories, feelings of anxiety, regret, desire, dreams and the inexpressible which resides deep within me."

Insulate Ukraine

Overview

We bring warmth, light and safety to war-impacted homes with an innovative window developed with the help of engineers from the University of Cambridge. We've installed more than 20,000 windows in cities across Ukraine. Our projects provide work to financially destitute areas empowering local communities.

Problem

During winter many Ukrainians will face freezing conditions due to their windows being shattered. Current solutions such as OSB fall short on several counts. They don't insulate well, they don't let light through, they can be difficult to install, and they shatter.

Solution

Our triple-glazed polyethylene windows provide an affordable, effective remedy, that increases resilience in communities worst affected by the invasion.

Benefits

Our windows present multifaceted benefits. For recipients, they ensure warmth, safety, and improved living conditions. Local civilians gain work which fuels regional business. Donors contribute to a solution that enhances energy efficiency, supports economic growth, and aids the most vulnerable, creating profound environmental, economic, and social impacts in Ukraine.
