About

Riikka Sormunen was born in Finland in 1987. After a brief stint studying fashion design, the artist worked as an illustrator before focusing entirely on painting. Riikka Sormunen’s paintings mix soft sensuality with calculated artificiality in scenes that feature characters, plants, and objects striking poses for viewers. Working mainly with watercolor, water mixable oil and tiny brushes, the artist’s work explores contrasting textures, patterns and colors. Sormunen’s painstakingly crafted compositions draw from her excessive daydreaming, focusing on escapist pleasures, solitary meltdowns and performative femininity.

Group exhibitions that have shown Sormunen’s work have taken place at: Marvin Gardens in Ridgewood, New York (2022); Pamplemousse Gallery in Richmond, Virginia (2022); Natasha Arselan Gallery in London, UK (2022); Ladies Room in Los Angeles, California (2022); Tchotchke Gallery in New York City (2021); and Kosminen in Helsinki, Finland (2020).

Insulate Ukraine

Overview

We bring warmth, light and safety to war-impacted homes with an innovative window developed with the help of engineers from the University of Cambridge. We've installed more than 20,000 windows in cities across Ukraine. Our projects provide work to financially destitute areas empowering local communities.

Problem

During winter many Ukrainians will face freezing conditions due to their windows being shattered. Current solutions such as OSB fall short on several counts. They don't insulate well, they don't let light through, they can be difficult to install, and they shatter.

Solution

Our triple-glazed polyethylene windows provide an affordable, effective remedy, that increases resilience in communities worst affected by the invasion.

Benefits

Our windows present multifaceted benefits. For recipients, they ensure warmth, safety, and improved living conditions. Local civilians gain work which fuels regional business. Donors contribute to a solution that enhances energy efficiency, supports economic growth, and aids the most vulnerable, creating profound environmental, economic, and social impacts in Ukraine.
