About

Vanessa Liem (b. 2002, Singapore) graduated under the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) in Visual Arts at School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) in 2020.

Liem delves into the themes of voyeurism and power dynamics inherent in the relationship between the viewer and painting. Through figuration, Liem explores performativity in the depiction of self, and the reclaiming of our agency through the choreography of her figures.

Vanessa Liem has participated and curated several SOTA art exhibitions. For her work, she won Gold for the 2019 UOB Painting of the Year, Emerging Category. Liem is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of the Arts, London.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

“The two postcards explore the body, perception and the idea of self-gaze.  They are visual representations of the intimate yet estranged moment, almost meta experience of catching yourself in a reflection; the sudden confrontation of the physical vessel that is you.”
