About
Caroline Coon was born in London and in 1967 she went to study fine art at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art. There she carved out a distinctive style of hyper-realist figurative painting, made through a feminist socialist lens. She has always been vocal critic of the misogyny, confronting and challenging the problematic views towards women that she both witnesses and was subjected to. The artist’s political activism is apparent across her fine art practice. Her ongoing Brothel Series paintings relates to her own experience as a sex worker.
In 2018, at the age of 73, Coon had her first ever solo show at The Gallery Liverpool titled: ‘The Great Offender'. This was followed by a solo exhibition at TRAMPS in London (2019) curated by Peter Doig and Parinaz Magadassi. Her work featured in ‘Mixing It Up: Painting Today’ at the Hayward Gallery, London (2021). Two paintings by the artist in the Tate’s permanent collection.
Coon’s work is currently highlighted in the group exhibition ‘Women in Revolt!’, which is touring the UK from Tate Britain, London. A two-person exhibition with Francesca DiMattio will take place at Stephen Friedman Gallery, New York in January 2025. The artist is represented by the Stephen Friedman Gallery and she lives and works in London.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
This year I have made two postcards relating to my 'Skinscapes' series of paintings and works on paper celebrating aging and the beauty of old skin - ‘Skinscapes - a symptomatic Hepatitis C rash - let’s cure it!’. (1/2 and 2/2). I have used thick acrylic to evoke skin texture overlaid an abstract pattern of the marks made by the Hepatitis C rash.
