About
Kimberly Martins, a 21-year-old self-taught artist, creates compelling illustrations from her bedroom studio. Her piece “Chema Mwana Wangu,” translated ‘Cry my Child’ is inspired by her brother Sean.

It portrays a young man’s face emerging from ethereal mists. This title, in Zimbabwe’s Shona language, underscores the work’s cultural roots. The illustration exemplifies Kimberly’s mission to amplify her siblings’ voices through art.

As the eldest, her creations are profoundly influenced by family bonds. Despite her youth, Kimberly has refined her craft for years, developing a unique style. Her natural artistic talent, honed without formal training, was recognised by Women in Art 2024 prize and she was awarded the prestigious Susan Angoy Prize for artists of African and Caribbean heritage.
